Bruichladdich (feel free to say Brookladdie, everybody else does) is one the most western distilleries in Scotland, founded in 1881 on Islay, close to Loch Indaal. The distillery changed hands five times between 1945 and 1995, before being mothballed. In 2000, a couple of whisky insiders, including Jim McEwan and Mark Reynier, gave Bruichladdich a new lease on life. While most whiskies on Islay are known for their peatiness, Bruichladdich produces mostly non-peated whisky. The new management experiments with finishes like there is no tomorrow, resulting in a plethora of releases of various finishes, an absolute feast for the whiskylovers. The owners have plans to resurrect the lost Octomore distillery, but in the meantime, Bruichladdich produces Octomore whisky, the most peated whiskies in the world.
