In the 19th Century, Ferdinand Bernard Filliers distilled his first Jenever on his farm distillery near Deinze in Belgium. When a fire destroyed the farm almost completely in 1863, it took until 1880 until Kamiel Filliers gave his uncle’s distillery a new lease on life. His motto was tradition where needed, modernization where possible. Filliers is now a modern distillery and has been in the family for five generations. The brand includes licqueurs, malt wine, wodka and whisky. Their whisky – named Goldlys – is produced according to the double still method. The name takes us back in time in when flax painted the river Lys gold. In October 2008 a bus accident in Egypt claimed the life of COA Jan Filliers, but his legacy goes on and Filliers is still the market leader in Belgium with regards to Jenever.
