The Aberlour Distillery in Speyside was built in 1879 by James Fleming, a former banker and grain merchant. He built it close to St Drostan’s Well, securing an unlimited supply of fresh water. The famous whisky journalist Alfred Barnard – who visited Aberlour in 1880 – described it as ‘a perfectly modern distillery’. In 1898, the buildings most of the stocks were lost in a huge fire. Aberlour was then rebuilt by the reknowned Scottish architect Charles Doig (famous for the pagoda roof over the kiln). The most recent modernization included the building of the Fleming Rooms, a beautiful visitor center in honor of the founding father. For more than a decade now, Aberlour has a spot in the top 10 of the best selling malts in the world. It is especially popular in France, which is the only country to have the 15 Year Old Cuvée Marie d’Ecosse.
