The Auchentoshan distillery – founded in 1823 – lies just northwest of the city of Glasgow, along the banks of the river Clyde. We are – of course – in the Lowlands. It is one of the few distilleries that uses triple distillation for every drop of spirit they produce. The water is taken from Loch Katrine in the Highlands, about 35 kilometers north of the distillery. The visitor center opened in 2004 and recently won a ‘best visitor center’ award. The packaging was completely overhauled in 2008. Auchentoshan (pronounced ‘ockn-toshun’) is Gaelic for ‘corner of the field’. The range has expanded considerably in the last couple of years. Auchentoshan is owned by Suntory, a Japanese consortium that also owns Bowmore and Glen Garioch.
